Frequently Asked Questions
- Q. What is Viddyou?
- A. Put simply, Viddyou is the best place for sharing your personal videos. We have a strict no-tolerance policy for the illegal uploading of copyrighted works, and ask that you only upload videos that you make. Viddyou is designed with four key elements in mind: Quality, Privacy, Mobility, and Ease of use.
- Q. What is a "Vidd"?
- A. Videos posted on Viddyou are better than normal videos so we had to come up with a special name for them. This is it. :)
- Q. Tell me about privacy (please).
- A. At Viddyou we take privacy very seriously, so our goal is to allow you full control over exactly who sees the videos you post allowing you to make those memories as public or private as they originally were (or you'd have liked them to be). Besides making a video open to the whole Viddyou community ("Public"), you can make a video only available to friends you've designated on Viddyou ("Friends-Only"), or for those memories you want to keep to yourself you can mark them "Private". Using our Custom Privacy Groups (found by clicking "Manage", "Friends", and then "Privacy Groups" after logging in) you can have complete control to decide exactly which of your friends can or cannot see videos in custom "groups" that you define. - Q. What are the differences in the account types?
- A.

- Q. I'd like to suggest a feature, give some feedback, or I have other questions not answered here.
- A. We love to hear from our community! Please visit our Contact page where you can find several ways to reach us. We read every message that comes through, and are eager to hear from you.
- Q. What file formats do you accept?
- A. Viddyou accepts all of the popular video file formats such as; .avi, .dv, .mov, .qt, .mpeg, .mp4, .3gp, .asf, .wmv, .moov, .flv, .divx, .mpg, .m4v, .3gpp, and .3g2
- Q. What is High Definition (HD)?
- A. High Definition video is visually superior to the standard definition (SD) video you're used to seeing. A higher video resolution and bitrate allows you to clearly show off your videos in stunning life-like detail. At Viddyou we offer 720p and 1080p High Definition to our premium members. This is the same High Definition used on HD Televisions, and major networks such as CBS, ABC, and Fox.
- Q. How do I get my videos to appear in HD?
- A. If you are a premium member, it's very easy to take advantage of our High Definition capabilities. All you have to do is upload a video in a supported HD resolution (1280x720 for 720p or 1920x1080 for 1080p). Our servers will automatically detect your High Definition video, and encode it accordingly.
- Q. Onsite recording inconsistencies
- A. Our onsite recording automatically adjusts the output video quality to match the capabilities of your Internet connection and computer. If you find that your webcam video is choppy, or of a poorer quality than when you use a desktop application, we suggest you check the upstream (upload) speed of your Internet connection, and turn off any background programs or uploaders that may be hogging your available bandwidth.
- Q. Technical requirements for browsing
- A. We've found that most computers made in the last several years are fast enough to smoothly play our HD and regular video content. We do require Flash player 9, and a modern browser (Firefox, Safari, IE, Opera, etc). Your average residential DSL or Cable connection should be fast enough, but with video: the faster your connection is, the more fluid your browsing experience will be.
- Q. How do I upload a video?
- A. After logging in, press the "Home" button. From this screen, you should enter in a title as well as a brief description for the video you are about to upload. Then you can select where you'd like the video to upload to. If you intend to upload the video to a community, you can select one of your joined communities from the "Post Vidd To" menu, though for most cases you can probably just leave this at its default. You can also select your privacy group for the video. Public (anyone can see), Private (only you can see), Friends-Only (all of the people you've marked as friends on Viddyou can see), or you can use one of your custom privacy groups here to have full control over exactly who can, and can't see your video. Then select a file (you may want to read "What file formats do you accept?"), and press upload. You'll see an upload progress bar indicating how long it will take your video to reach our servers. After your upload is complete you are free to continue browsing. You will receive an email once your video is ready to be viewed.
- Q. How do I record a video with my webcam?
- A. If you have a webcam connected to your computer, you can use it to post a video directly to Viddyou without the need to download any software. Nearly all of the popular webcams are supported, and most are automatically detected, so you won't need to do any setup. Just click, and start recording! [Recording a video Tutorial]
- Q. How do I add or remove friends?
- A. When you see a green + (plus) picture next to a user icon this means you are able to become friends with them. Click the green + icon once, and you will be prompted to confirm that you would like to be friends with this user. After clicking yes, that user will be added to your friends. You will notice that now the green + icon has become a red - (minus) icon. To remove a friend, click the red - icon, and confirm. You can also click on "Manage" and then "Friends" to remove a friend at any time. [Adding Friends Tutorial]
- Q. What are communities?
- A. Communities are similar to individual accounts on Viddyou, except several people (or more) can post videos to it, and an "Admin" moderates the community. You can start one for your school, favorite hobby, club, or anything else you can imagine.
- Q. What is a profile vidd?
- A. For those not satisfied with the confines of the written word (and on here, who is?) this is your chance to make an introduction that's as animated as you are in real life.
- Q. How do I share a video on my blog, MySpace, etc?
- A. It's easy to post your videos wherever you want them to be seen. Whenever you're viewing a video on Viddyou.com there will be a "Share" button below the video (between "Respond" and "Report"). Just click that, and a box will open right below it with a code for you to copy and paste wherever you like.

- Q. How do I view a video on my smart phone?

In order to view videos, please make sure you have a phone capable of viewing .3gp video files, and a data connection plan.
- Q. How do I set up mobile posting?
- A. First, you'll need to set a mobile posting password. This password will be used only to post from your mobile device, and can't be used to login to Viddyou. To setup your mobile password: login to your account, click the "Manage" button, and then "Account", enter a mobile posting password of your choice, and then click "Update".

For instance if my username was aaron and my mobile posting password was burritos, I would send the message to aaron.burritos@m.viddyou.com. [Mobile Posting Demo]
